So a preview trailer of the new Star Trek movie is out. Interesting. Pretty uninformative as it turns out, but interesting. Of course it has to be apocalyptic…
The question is still who the villain is. It could still be Khan. I suppose. In which case I hope they do a better job re-imagining Botany Bay than they did with the Enterprise.
I’ve found a few other rumors about the villain. Khan of course. One guy mentioned Garth of Izar. Wikipedia listed Benedict Cumberbatch as playing Gary Mitchell, though that has since been revised to, “villain.” That idea has had some play around the intertubes.
The synopsis that was released seems to blow out the Khan idea.
When the crew of the Enterprise is called back home, they find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization has detonated the fleet and everything it stands for, leaving our world in a state of crisis.
Both Garth of Izar and Gary Mitchell were Starfleet officers. They were both pretty dangerous fellows. I need to re-watch, “Whom Gods Destroy,” but I just don’t remember Garth being all that superhuman except for the shapeshifting thing. The new villain seems to be a bit of a combat monster. That leap he made in the trailer looked like either something superhuman or something anime or both.
Apparently, there’s a Countdown to Darkness comic book that acts as an apparently official prequel to this movie. How very Whedonesque. Gary Mitchell features prominently. This is used as evidence that Mitchell isn’t going to be the villain in the movie. In a recent issue, see, Mitchell gets shot with a phaser. He gets a space-burial. You know, they put him in a photon torpedo tube and shoot him into space. Well, that’s that. No one could survive a phaser hit. Who ever came back to life after being shot out of a photon torpedo tube. Yup. It couldn’t possibly be Gary Mitchell.
How about this woman?
Who is this? She figures fairly prominently in the trailer, but like most things in the trailer, you don’t know anything about her.
I have a couple notions about who she could just possibly be…
One possibility is that she could be the, “little blonde lab technician,” who Gary Mitchell set Kirk up with. The blue eyes check out, and, “lab technicians,” do often grow up to be brilliant research scientists who invent new doomsday machines.
I have another idea, though…
I think it could be this lady right here. She lacks the blue eyes, but they’ll be changing later, anyway. Won’t they?
Jimbo seems a bit shocked to be seeing this guy.
Who really seems quite comfortable in the center seat. Like he might have spent some time on the Enterprise lately. Maybe before someone tried to kill him with a phaser and shoot his body out of a torpedo tube.
And how the heck did the Enterprise end up in the water?
Looks like someone threw it there!
How about that?
EDIT: Trekmovie has a shot-by-shot analysis of the trailer. Perfect for the impatient trekkie nerd…
